Manitoba launched the PFD Loan Program in 2006 with the goal of reducing the frequency of drowning incidents in northern and remote communities.
A community must apply and agree to run this program to receive PFD’s. They are sent free of charge. The program is funded by Manitoba Department of Health, Healthy Living & Seniors. To date nearly 6,000 PFD’s have been distributed among almost 100 of Manitoba’s northern communities. That number continues to grow each year.
How Does the Program Work?
- Communities are responsible for organizing their own PFD loan programs.
- PFD’s are usually loaned out in a system similar to a library.
